An awe inspiring journey into a collection of Christianity’s most important churches, an in-depth look at the history that shaped them along the way: whether you are a religious person or not, Christian Rome tour will fascinate you and win your heart.
We start our tour at the Basilica of St. Clement, built just before the year 1100, decorated with spectacular mosaics and frescoes. We further travel back in time by exploring two levels beneath the medieval Basilica: the Basilica of the fourth century and further down a first century pagan temple.
A short walk and we get to the Scala Sancta, or Holy Stairs, brought from Jerusalem by Constantine I’s mother, St. Helena. The devouts come to climb the stairs on their knees as, legend has it, Jesus did on his way to trial under Pontius Pilate.
Near the Scala Santa lies the colossal Archbasilica of St. John of Lateran, the seat of the Pope, built on the site of Constantine victory over Maxentius. The facade retains its imposing character with giant corinthian columns framing a large 2-story portico and the 12 apostles crowning the top; the interior with its gold apse is pure opulence. St. John of Lateran has the title of ecumenical mother church of the Roman Catholic faithful and, as far as the Vatican is concerned, it is still the most important basilica in the world.
We conclude our tour at the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, that was consecrated circa 325 AD to house the relics of the Passion of Jesus Christ. The most famous relics are the fragments of the Holy Cross of Jesus, found by St. Helena on Calvarium in Jerusalem. The other relics include the Titulus Crucis (the inscription which was on the top of the cross); one of the nails; two thorns of the crown of Jesus; the finger of St. Thomas, the Apostle who doubted Christ’s resurrection; part of the Good Thief’s cross.
