The Roman Castles area is a set of small towns of the Alban Hills, on the sorroundings of the Eternal City. Due their close proximity to Rome, their magnificent landscapes, art and food, Castelli Romani are an all time favourite destination, both by romans and tourists.
The tour starts from Castel Gandolfo, a lovely town overlooking a volcanic lake, that hosts the Pope’s summer residence. In addition to the Papal Palace there is plenty of attractions here, from roman ruins to baroque churches and villas. Then we move to Grottaferrata for visting the spectacular Abbey founded by St. Nilo, who brought his group of Basilian monks here in 1004. The order is unique in that it’s Roman Catholic but observes Greek Orthodox rites. The Abbey is a jewel of Oriental opulence, with glittering Byzantine mosaics and a revered icon set into a marble tabernacle designed by Bernini. The Farnese chapel contains a series of frescoes by Domenichino.
Next stop is Marino, whose main sights include churches and basilicas in baroque and rococo style of XVII and XVIII century. The tour ends in Frascati, known for its artistic heritage, characterized by ancient villas and castles. The architecture of Frascati is typical of medieval towns, with small streets, alleys and historic shops. The city is also famous for its white wine and for the splendid panoramic views over Rome.
