St. Peter is the greatest and largest of all churches of Christendom and the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture. Designed principally by Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini, the monumental basilica is beyond spectacular outside (the forecourt in two sections, both surrounded by tall colonnades, the impressive facade, the iconic large dome – known as “Cupolone”) and inside. You could spend days inside the basilica’s marble-cloaked chapels, overwhelmed by sublime beauty.
The Vatican Museums, founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century and enlarged by successive pontiffs, boast one of the world’s greatest art collections. Exhibits, which are displayed along about 7km of halls and corridors, range from Egyptian mummies and Etruscan bronzes to ancient busts, old masters and modern paintings. Highlights include the spectacular collection of classical statuary in the Museo Pio-Clementino, a suite of rooms frescoed by Raphael, and of corurse the Michelangelo-painted Sistine Chapel.
